Earlier this month, Alexandra Fitzpatrick traveled to Rocky Mount, North Carolina as part of Boston College's Appalachia program, which organizes an annual service trip over spring break. Below, Fitzpatrick shares memories from her experience:
"Over spring break, I participated in a service trip hosted through the Boston College Appalachia program. The Boston College Appalachia group has over 600 members that meets weekly and culminates in a weeklong service trip to the Appalachian region of the United States. In order to go on a trip we were encouraged to fundraise, and we raised over $280,000 throughout the year. Spring break finally arrived, and I travelled with 13 other students in my group to Rocky Mount, North Carolina to participate in a small Habitat for Humanity trip. Throughout the week, we worked on a house site, hanging doors, trimming, painting and sanding, and when the weather permitted, we were able to put up siding on the outside of the house. Along with working on the job site, we were able to get involved in the community by attending church services and dinners, and also serving food at the homeless shelter. This has been one of my best experiences thus far at Boston College, and I am continuing my involvement with the program in hopes of eventually leading a trip to the Appalachian region in the coming years."
