Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College is currently 21-11 and preparing for a familiar foe - St. John's. BC will travel to New York and play the Red Storm tonight at 7 p.m. in the second round game of the WNIT.
This is the second consecutive appearance for Boston College in the WNIT. The Eagles are 2-1 in the WNIT.
BC is coming off a 86-53 victory over cross-town rival Boston University in the second round game. Last season, Boston College defeated Vermont in the second round but fell to St. John's in the third round.
BOSTON COLLEGE VS. ST. JOHN'S
• St. John's leads the head-to-head series, 29-14.
• BC and St. John's last met in the St. John's Chartwell Holiday Tournament on Dec. 21. 2009. The Red Storm defeated the Eagles, 72-63.
• St. John's has won the last two games. The last time Boston College earned a victory against St. John's was on March 1, 2005 behind 22 points from Kathrin Ress in the Big East Tournament.
• Tonight's game is a rematch of last season's WNIT third round game. St. John's defeated BC, 65-56, on March 27 at Carnesecca Arena.
LAST TIME OUT
Boston College played Boston University for the first time since 2005. The Eagles earned a 68-53 victory in the second round of the WNIT. BC was down at the half but held BU to just 19 second half points. BC out rebounded BU, 57-23, while Carolyn Swords (16 pts. 10 rebs) and Stefanie Murphy (11 pts., 11 rebs.) earned double-doubles. Sophomore Lauren Whitehurst added seven points and nine rebounds.
TEAM NOTES
• Boston College is currently 3-1 in the month of March. The Eagles only loss came in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament against then No. 12/14 Florida State on March 6.
• The Eagles have won the battle of the boards in 26 of 32 games. In the six games BC did not capture more rebounds than its opponent, the Eagles are 1-5. Against Boston University on Monday, the Eagles out rebounded the Terriers, by 34 boards (57-23). It was the largest rebounding margin in a single game this season. The team is averaging 41.4 boards a game.
]• Boston College sophomore Carolyn Swords was recently named as a Top 50 Finalist for the State Farm All-America team. Swords is the only sophomore in Region 2 and one of only eight in the Top 40. Swords also was named to the All-ACC second team, All-ACC All-Tournament second team and All-ACC Academic team.
• Junior guard Mickel Picco, an All-ACC honorable mention honoree, has made 163 career three's and is currently in third on the all-time list at BC. • Junior forward Ayla Brown is just 10 rebounds away from reaching the 500 rebound plateau. Brown will be the 18th player in BC history to join the 500-point-500-rebound club.
