After impressive results in the fall season, the Boston College women's golf team looks to build upon the success of 2008 going into the spring season.
Though the Eagles lost their two senior captains from last season, Katie Napleton and Lara Smilnak, to graduation, the newcomers have stepped in to fill the void, and the team has not missed a beat. Last October, the Eagles took first place in the Rutgers Invitational for the team's first win since the spring of 2007.
Head Coach Trevor Drum, in his fifth season coaching the women's team, was pleased after the team's "tremendous" fall season.
"I think this team's best golf is ahead of them," Drum said. "They came together in the fall and are looking for more success this spring."
Though the Eagles have no seniors on the team, junior captains Natalie Draganza and Meghan Martinek have provided strong leadership, creating an environment where the freshmen have been able to succeed early on.
"Natalie Draganza and Meghan Martinek are great captains," Drum said. "They have taken the younger players under their wings, and have helped in guiding the team on a daily basis. They back up what they say with low scores on the course. Their leadership is the main reason we were so successful in the fall."
Joining the Eagles this fall are three talented freshmen, Carolyn Barbee from Cartersville, Georgia, Stephanie Hu from Cerritos, California, and Eunice Yim from La Canada, California. Yim has already made her presence felt, with an individual title in the fall at the Lehigh Invitational.
Sophomore Kelsey Rockey, a member of the 2008 ACC All-Academic Team, recorded the team's best individual performance at the ACC Championship last spring, and will be another key contributor for the Eagles this spring.
The spring season gets underway with a trip to Fort Pierce, Fla. for the Treasure Coast Classic. The Eagles will make trips to Daytona, Fla., Leesberg, Va., and to nearby Brockton, Ma., before concluding the season at the ACC Championship in Greensboro, NC.
In looking at the schedule, Coach Drum has high hopes for a team that has shown a lot of promise already.
"We have the talent to win each week," Drum said. "It shows in the confidence they display every time they tee it up."
