Ramella Receives Scanlan Award; Gunnell Voted Team MVP

Senior DE Jim Ramella received the Scanlan Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College football player, at the team's annual Scanlan Awards Banquet Sunday afternoon at the Sheraton Needham.
The Scanlan Award is presented to the senior football player who excels on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Ramella started all 12 games at right end and finished the regular season with 29-straight starts on the defensive line. He has 27 tackles this season to go along with four tackles for a loss. Ramella leads the team with three sacks and two forced fumbles and is second among defensive linemen with 20 solo tackles.
Senior WR Rich Gunnell was voted the 2009 Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Gunnell was the first wide receiver captain since 1990 and ranks second on the all-time BC receptions list (175), third in receiving yards (2,329) and fourth in touchdown catches (17). He is the ACC active leader in career catches, receiving yards and punt return touchdowns.
This season, Gunnell leads the team in catches (54), yards (750), touchdowns (6) and average yards per game (62.5).
Other award winners included Mike McLaughlin (Gridiron Club Award); Marcellus Bowman (Unsung Hero Award); Matt Tennant (Coaches' Award); Austin Giles (Paul Cavanagh Award); Wes Davis (Jay McGillis Scholarship Award); Steve Aponavicius (Special Teams Award); John Hovsepian and Jarick Walker (Scout Team Award).
