
Women's Basketball Falls To San Diego, 61-56

(Monday, December 28, 2009) San Diego, CA - The Boston College women's basketball team lost to San Diego, 61-56, at the Maggie Dixon Surf `n Slam Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. BC is now 7-6 on the season, while San Diego improved to 8-6.
BC was led by junior Carolyn Swords with 13 points and had 10 rebounds, while Mickel Picco notched 11 points. Junior forward Stefanie Murphy added nine points and five rebounds. San Diego was led by Dominique Conners notched 20 points, while Morgan Henderson added 12 points.
BC fell behind quickly in the first half as the Eagles came out cold. BC was shooting 35 percent in the half and fell behind 21-15 11 minutes into the game. BC fell behind by 10 points at the six minute mark as the Eagles turned the ball over (12 turnovers in the half) and missed some key shots. Connors kept the Toreros offense running as she scored 14 points in the half and BC was down, 37-38, at the half. San Diego shot 48 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the three-point line in the half, while BC was 1-for-5 from the arc and shot Jaclyn Thoman started the second half rally on a three-pointer from the corner to start the second half. BC cut the USD lead to six points but Carolyn Swords picked up her fourth foul and the Toreros gained momentum.
Two foul shots by Sam Childs extended the lead to 45-37 with 11:41 to play. Seven consecutive points by freshman Danesia Williamson gave USD a 51-42 lead at 8:24 to play. A three-pointer by Mickel Picco cut into the lead, 52-45. Two free throws by Swords and BC was in the game 52-49 at 6:20 to play.
A Brittanny Johnson free throw cut the USD lead to two points at 5:23. Erica Carlson scored two straight points inside the the Toreros lead was six. The Eagles missed four straight shots in a two minutes span and could not cut into the lead. A three-pointer by Morgan Henderson at 16 seconds sealed the win for the Toreros. The Eagles shot 32 percent from the floor in the game and just 23 percent from the three-point line.
Game Notes: Mickel Picco has hit a three-pointer in 24 consecutive games ... Carolyn Swords went 7-for-7 from the free throw line. She also notched her sixth double-double of the season ... BC shot a season-low 33 percent from the floor ... Picco, Swords and Stefanie Murphy earned a spot on the All-Tourna
