Chestnut Hill, MA - Junior Stefanie Murphy scored a game-high 16 points and classmate Carolyn Swords totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead Boston College to a 62-56 win over Wright State on a snowy Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
Senior Brittanny Johnson added eight points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
BC (6-5) scored the game's first five points and extended its lead to 12-6 just more than five minutes into the contest. All five starters scored in this opening stretch.
The Eagles led by as many as nine points - 18-9 with 10:47 to play - in the first half on two foul shots by freshman Kerri Shields (five points, four rebounds). A layup by Murphy at 4:41 gave BC a 12 point lead. Murphy led all scorers at the half with eight points.
The Raiders (4-5) closed the margin to four points twice in the second half, but BC never allowed Wright State any closer. Shields hit a three-pointer at 11:52 to extend the BC lead to seven points. A layup by Murphy at 8:09 increased the BC lead to eight points, 48-40. The lead extended to 13 points but Kanisha Ward (10 points) hit two three pointers in the final two minutes to close the gap.
Game Notes: The 19 points allowed by the Boston College defense in the first half was their lowest total by an opponent in a half this season ... Freshman guard Kerri Shields tied a career-high in rebounds with four ... Shields has now made at least one three-point field goal in five consecutive games ... Senior guard Mickel Picco has now made a three-point field goal in 21 consecutive games ... The Eagles forced a season-high 21 turnovers on defense in the win ... Senior center Carolyn Swords recorded her 22nd career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the win ... The +25 rebounding margin (42-17) was the largest for the Eagles in a game this season.
