Boston College women's basketball team dropped its third consecutive game of the season in a 84-65 loss to non-conference foe Vermont on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum. BC is now 0-3 and will host Holy Cross on Tuesday, November 24 at 7 p.m. Vermont improved to 3-0.
The Catamounts were led by Courtnay Pilypaitis with 36 points, 5-for-9 from the three-point line, while May Kotsopoulos with 22 points, 14-for-15 from the foul line.
BC had four players in double-figures - Mickel Picco (12 points), Jasmine Gill (13 points) and Ayla Brown (10 points), while junior Carolyn Swords added a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Vermont opened the second half on a 14-2 run and Boston College never recovered. The Eagles fell behind when Pilypaitis nailed two three-pointers from the top of arc and BC was down 51-30. BC tried to contain Pilypaitis but she shot 7-for-12 from the field, 5-for-5 from the free throw line and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. The closest BC got in the second half was 16 points at 10:53 in the game.
From the start Vermont was ready to play. The Catamounts took a 13-8 lead just five minutes into the game. The Eagles cut the lead to four when Mickel Picco hit a three-pointer from the baseline at 12:40 in the game.
Stefanie Murphy rebound and put back at 9:50 cut the deficit to one point. Vermont went on a 7-0 run and BC's only answer was two foul shots by Ayla Brown, Vermont led 25-20 at 4:19. The Eagles next field goal did not come until 2:43 in the game on a Jasmine Gill put back. Vermont continued to push forward as the Catamounts went on a 7-2 run to go up 10 with 1:57 to play in the half. Vermont took a 35-23 lead into the locker room on two foul shots by Kotsopoulos.
BC shot 34 percent in the first half and 42 percent for the game. The Eagles also turned the ball over 24 times. Vermont shot 42 percent from the floor and won the battle on the boards, 35-30.
GAME NOTES:
The last time Boston College started a season 0-3 was in the 1991-92 season ... Junior center Carolyn Swords set a new season-high with 10 rebounds in the loss ... BC set a new season-high in turnovers with 24 ... Swords had her first double-double of the season in the loss with 10 points and 13 rebounds ... Freshman guard Kerri Shields made her first three-pointer of her career with 2:20 left in the game ... Sophomore guard Jasmine Gill set a new career-high in assists with five in the loss.
