The Boston College women's basketball team suffered an 82-81 loss to Harvard at Lavietes Pavilion. It was the season opener for both teams.
Harvard shot a sizzling 52.8 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the three-point line, while Boston College shot 48 percent but only 28 percent from the arc. The Crimson went 16-for-25 (64%) in the second half.
Harvard's Emma Markley led four Crimson players in double-figures with 23 points. She shot 10-for-18 from the field and scored 18 in the second half. Victoria Lippert added 14 points, Claire Wheeler notched 12 points and Jackie Alemny added 13 points.
The Eagles were led by sophomore Jasmine Gill with 24 points, 20 in the second half. Junior Carolyn Swords with 22 points and had seven rebounds, while Ayla Brown notched 17 points in the loss.
Five minutes into the game BC held a 12-5 lead behind four points from Swords. Harvard tied the game at 16-16 on a three-pointer from Christine Matera at the nine minute mark. The Crimson took a 34-33 halftime lead behind six three-pointers (46 percent from the arc).
The second half, Harvard jumped out to a seven point lead on a jumper by Lippert at 16:04. The Eagles battled and tied the game at 51-51 on a layup by Brown at 13:08. The game swayed back-and-forth as there were 12 ties and eight lead changes in the half.
BC tied the game with 2:06 to play on a layup by Gill. After a time out, Lippert hit one of two free throws to give Harvard a one point lead. Both Gill and Swords missed layups that would have cut into the lead. Lippert gave Harvard an 81-79 lead with 31 seconds to play on another free throw.
After a BC turnover with 18 seconds to play, Markley hit one of two free throws to give the Crimson a three point lead. BC freshman Kelsey Reynolds had a three-pointer roll around the rim but BC retained possession. Off the time out, BC was looking for a three-pointer to tie the game but Harvard surrendered an uncontested layup and earned the win.
Game Notes:
Senior Brittanny Johnson earned her 26th career start ... Carolyn Swords notched her 1,000 career point on a free throw with 17 seconds to play in the half ... The Eagles will play next at Rutgers on Thursday, November 19 (7 p.m.).
