Newton, MA -
The No. 7 Boston College women's soccer team finished the regular season with an exciting 2-1 double-overtime victory over No. 11 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Field.
The Eagles ended the season with a 15-2-1 overall record and an ACC record of 7-2-1. BC will share the regular season championship with Florida State, which also finished the season with a 7-2-1 conference record. It is the first ACC regular season title in the program's history. BC also secured the second seed in the ACC Tournament by virtue of the head-to-head series vs. Florida State.
This is a historic moment for our program to win our first regular season ACC championship in our fifth year in the conference,'' said BC Head Coach Alison Kulik. "This accomplishment coupled with 15 wins with our strength of schedule should set us up for a high seed for the NCAA tournament. We are really looking forward to post-season play.''
BC junior Chelsea Regan would end the marathon game in the 108th minute. BC earned a corner kick and Hannah Cerrone sent a long ball into the box at about the 17 yard line. Regan out-jumped the Wake Forest defense and headed the ball over the Demon Deacons goalkeeper Amanda Barasha. It was Regan's third goal of the season and first game-winner.
Wake Forest scored first when Jill Hutchinson ran onto a through ball from Kaley Fountain. Hutchinson held off the BC defender and placed the ball by goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni (three saves) for a 1-0 lead at 16:53 of the match.
BC freshman Victoria DiMartino tied the game in the 31st minute on her 14th goal of the season. She stole the ball at midfield from a Wake Forest midfielder. DiMartino dribbled through a couple of defenders and ripped a right-footed shot from 23-yards out to the right of a surprised Barasha (four saves).
Both teams had great chances in the second half. BC's midfielder Gina DiMartino hit the post in the 51st minute of play when she one-timed a cross from Amy Caldwell. Wake Forest responded in the 76th minute when Casey Luckhurst beat the Eagles defense to a ball in the box but her shot sailed high over the crossbar.
BC sophomore Julia Bouchelle almost put the game away in the 81st minute with a shot to the near post from 15 yards out. Barasha came up with a solid save to keep the game tied at 1-1. Minutes later, Barasha robbed Kristen Mewis on her shot from just inside the box. Wake Forest's Allie Sadow had a great opportunity in the 86th minute but Mastroianni made a kick save on her offering to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Eagles had a corner kick just two minutes into the play but Barasha came out to cut off the crossed ball. With 2:11 to play, the Eagles defense misplayed a bouncing ball in the box. The ball rolled towards the far post but Mewis calmly cleared the ball from the line to send the game into the second overtime.
Boston College held the edge in shots, 20-8. The Eagles also had seven corner kicks to three by Wake Forest.
