Freshman Will Bates and sophomore Brian Ownby each scored second-half goals to lift host and 12th-ranked Virginia to a 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Boston College before 1,610 fans at Klockner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss snapped BC's four-game win streak that dated back to its Oct. 9 victory over Clemson.
UVA senior Neil Barlow assisted on both goal for the Cavaliers, who earned their 10th victory of the season and improve to 3-3 in ACC play.
The visiting Eagles fall to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in conference competition. The Eagles, Cavaliers and Duke Blue Devils are all tied for third in the league regular-season standings with nine points, one point behind second-place North Carolina. Wake Forest and Maryland are tied for first place in the ACC with 13 points. Each school has two conference games left except the Terps, who conclude their conference schedule on Oct. 31 against UVA.
Freshman forward Charlie Rugg (three shots) and junior co-captain Karl Reddick (two shots) led the Boston College offensive attack.
The Cavaliers totaled a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Ayotunde Ogunbiyi recorded seven saves, including four in the game's first 45 minutes, for the Eagles in his third appearance of the season and second consecutive start in net.
Virginia junior goalie Diego Restrepo totaled two second-half saves in the victory and sixth shutout of the season.
Today's game in Charlottesville, Va., concluded Boston College's three-game road stint in which the Eagles went 2-1 with victories at No. 2 North Carolina and at Holy Cross. The Eagles will play their last two regular-season games against conference opponents at home.
Next, BC hosts third-ranked Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Newton Campus Complex. BC concludes its 2009 regular-season slate at home on Friday, Nov. 6 against Virginia Tech.
Game Notes: In seven games as conference opponents, BC is 3-4 against Virginia ... BC had seven players in today's starting lineup who are either a freshman or sophomore, while Virginia's starting lineup included six first or second-year players ... The Eagles are now 3-3 against opponents ranked in the nation's Top 25.
