Durham, N.H. - Boston College women's ice hockey was upset 4-2 by the University of New Hampshire on Thursday night in game one of a home-and-home series between the Eagles and Wildcats this weekend.
The game was part of Hockey East's "Skating Strides against Breast Cancer" initiative that works to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment, BC will host their "pink" game tomorrow against UNH.
New Hampshire won the opening face-off, but the Eagles controlled the pace, send three quick shots on Wildcats goalie Kayley Herman. Despite the early showing of offense, UNH tallied the first goal of the night at the 14 minute mark, ending Molly Schaus's shutout streak at 143:36. Jenn Wakefield, the blue and white's leading scorer caught a pass from linemates Angela Taylor and Julie Allen through traffic in the crease and tipped it in to give UNH the 1-0 lead to close out the first frame.
The Eagles managed to hold off the Wildcats on several odd-man rushes in the second period but were unable to stop UNH from scoring two late period goals to push the score the 3-0.
BC had a slight advantage in shots over UNH in the period 14-13.
The spark finally caught for the Eagles in the third period after falling behind 4-0 early in the frame. On a two man advantage, junior Allie Thunstrom put the Eagles on the board off a dish from Kelli Stack and Maggie Taverna at 7:07 in the third.
The power play continued to be BC's strong suit with freshman Andrea Green cutting the UNH lead in half with Shannon Webster and Becky Zavisza on the assist.
BC pulled Schaus in favor of the extra skater with just under two minutes to play in the game but were unable to pull out the victory.
The Eagles outshot the Wildcats 38-29 and were 2-for-5 on the powerplay and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
BC and UNH continue their weekend with a match-up at Conte Forum, Friday night a 7 p.m.
