Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Boston College women's basketball team suffered its first ACC loss of the season, 52-48, against Wake Forest tonight at the final Joel Coliseum tonight.
Boston College drops to 13-4 and will play Miami on Sunday, Jan. 18 at Conte Forum (2 p.m.). Wake Forest is now 13-3 and will play Clemson on Sunday.
The Eagles were led by Mickel Picco with 13 points, while Carolyn Swords notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Brittanny Johnson also had 10 points, while Ayla Brown and Stefanie Murphy grabbed 12 and 13 rebounds respectively. Wake Forest was led by Brittany Waters with 20 points.
In the first half, Boston College took a 5-0 lead on two points from Murphy in the paint and a long threepointer from Picco. The Eagles lead increased to 11-0 at 11:53. Wake Forest scored their first point at 11:42 on a foul shot from Alex Tchangoue (14 points, 11 rebounds).
Wake Forest, which shot 24 percent from the field in the half, mounted a comeback in the final seven minutes as BC continued to throw the ball away. The Eagles had 17 turnovers in the half and shot just 29 percent from the field. A three-pointer from Tchangoue with under a minute to play gave the Demon Deacons a 21-20 halftime lead.
The Deacs opened the half with a 7-2 run but the Eagles fought back and to go up by one, 40-39 behind four points from Brittanny Johnson. The Deacs Brittany Waters then went on her own five point run for a four point lead, WF 44-40.
The Eagles cut at the lead slowly. BC went up 46-45 at 3:39 when Brittanny Johnson hit Carolyn Swords under for a basket on a pick and roll. Wake Forest Camille Colier hit a long three-pointer from the wing at 1:09 to play, giving the Deacs the lead for good, 48-46.
Game Notes: Boston College won the battle of the boards, grabbing a season-high 60 rebounds to Wake's 46. It is the first game this season BC lost when winning the battle of the boards ... Carolyn Swords notched her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds ... Three BC players had doubledigits in rebounds for the first time this season - Ayla Brown (12), Stefanie Murphy (13) and Swords (13) ... The Eagles shot a season low, 28 percent from the field.
