Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College field hockey team lost to the Virginia Cavaliers Friday at the Newton Campus Sports Complex 2-1 in double overtime.
This was the Eagles first home ACC matchup of the season and their first meeting with Virginia since the 3-2 overtime loss to the Cavaliers in the ACC Quarterfinals in 2007. The two teams battled the weather as much as each other as it rained steadily throughout the match, creating puddles on the turf that slowed down the play.
Virginia got the ball rolling early in the first period when freshman midfielder Paige Selenski caught a pass from teammate Lauren Elstein dribbled into the circle and managed to beat Eagles goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz on a shot to the left post.
BC continued to battle but had nothing to show for their efforts offensively until late in the period. Off a corner, sophomore forward Janna Anctil sent the ball across the circle to Bob Dirks who setup a shot for Chelsey Feole to tie the score at one.
The teams entered the second period tied at one and throughout the 35 minute second half neither team managed to gain the upper hand, leading to the Eagles first overtime home game of the season.
In overtime, BC had a prime opportunity early in the period with an offensive corner, but was stifled by Cavaliers goalkeeper Amy Desjadon. Viginia countered with a breakaway, but freshman Kate Gillis managed to chase her down and cause a turnover that defender Emily Kozniuk was able to punch out of the circle.
The Eagles battled to a scoreless tie to force the game into double overtime.
Both teams continued to pile on the pressure, but BC was put at a disadvantage when senior midfielder Katie Quaglia was whistled for a five minute penalty leaving the Eagles shorthanded. The Cavaliers took advantage and UVA's Traci Rajukas shot on goal caused Berowitz to make a diving save to keep the ball out of the net. Kozniuk got behind the play and prevented the ball from rolling into the cage to record her first defensive save of the season.
With the clock winding down towards penalty strokes, Virginia managed to corral the ball outside the circle and dodge the defenders to set up the game-winning goal to end the game.
The Eagles will be back in action when they travel to Rhode Island to take on Providence College on Wednesday October 1, at 7 p.m.
