August 30, 2008 | Field Hockey
Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College field hockey team beat the University of Massachusetts 3-2 Friday night in the season and home opener.
Playing before a home crowd, the No. 13 Eagles battled hard in a defense dominated first period, but went down by a goal with 32 seconds left in the first period. A fired up BC retaliated early in the second, as junior forward Chelsey Feole put the Eagles on the board at 26:36 with BC's first goal of the season.
The Minutewomen answered with goal number two at 13:50 to put UMass back on top heading into the final minutes.
BC tied the game on a well-timed penalty stroke by sophomore defenseman Emily Kozniuk who slipped the ball past UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall to even the game at two apiece.
Both teams battled hard in the final minutes, each looking for their first win of the season, but it was the Eagles who managed to put it away. With just over seven minutes to play Feole passed the ball to senior Bob Dirks who dribbled the ball into the circle, dodged the defender and beat Widdall to score her first goal of the season and put the Eagles ahead 3-2.
UMass had a late chance to score on a corner in the closing seconds of the game but couldn't convert it into a goal and the Eagles hung on for the win.
Boston College will face the University of Vermont Catamounts at home on Sunday, August 31 at 1 p.m.
