Boston College women's rowing raced in the Knecht Cup this weekend on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. It was the most successful outing of the season for the Eagles, as they brought home medals in the varsity four and the second varsity four events and reached finals in four more events.
In the varsity four, Boston College's "B" boat, crewed by Liz Keyser, Carolyn Lynch, Tracy Maciolek, Harriet Kadar and Marlene O'Hara, won a bronze medal in the grand final. The Eagles won their preliminary heat with a time of 8 minutes, 10.7 seconds to advance to the semifinal race. There, the Eagles again won their heat (in 7:53.8), qualifying them for the grand final. In Sunday's grand final, BC placed third in 7:34.9 to take home the bronze. Lafayette won the gold medal with a time of 7:30.7 and West Virginia took home silver with a time of 7:32.4.
The Eagles also earned a medal in the second varsity four event. Novice rowers Kelly Williams, Erin Flaherty, Stephanie Seitz and Meg Carmody and coxswain Brigid Morrissey were entered in the event and they rowed strongly, earning silver medals in the grand final. BC posted the best overall time (8:01.3) in the preliminary heats and finished second in the final in 7:48.0, just 6.5 seconds behind Villanova's gold medal pace.
Boston College reached another final in the varsity pair event. Angelique Hrycko and Heather Schofield rowed their way to a sixth-place finish overall, after having placed second in their preliminary heat.
In the varsity eight event, BC placed fifth in the third-level final. Eagle rowers Liz Keyser, Carolyn Lynch, Tracy Maciolek, Patricia Milla, Laura Harvey, Harriet Kadar, Angelique Hrycko, Heather Schofield and coxswain Whitney Lomax guided their boat to a fourth-place finish in the preliminary heat and a sixth-place finish in the semifinals. In the third-level final on Sunday, the Eagles placed fifth in 7:02.6. Lehigh took first place in 6:55.6.
The Eagles raced in the grand final of the novice eight event, placing fourth overall, even amidst some technical difficulties. During the final, the crew struggled a bit as a defective sound system made it impossible to hear the calls of the coxswain. Assistant coach Wendy Wilbur praised the crew (Stephanie Seitz, Erin Flaherty, Kelly Williams, Megan Carmody, Kelly Harrington, Elizabeth Glowacki, Sarah Brewster, Christina Rogers and coxswain Brigid Morrissey), saying, "We are very proud of the efforts of our novice eight, given the adversity in their final race."
Boston College made yet another appearance in a grand final on the weekend, as its novice four boat, led by Sarah Noah, Beth George, Hudson Berry, Kerry Noonan and Jen Muse, finished second in its semifinal heat and later placed fifth overall.
Next weekend, the Eagles will travel to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the ACC Championship on Lake Hartwell. Last year, the Eagles placed fifth at the conference championship regatta.
