Harbin, China - Sophomores Kelli Stack and Molly Schaus helped the United States Women's National Team capture the gold medal at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship. Team USA won the gold in a 4-3 victory over Canada for its second gold medal in the last three world championships.
The U.S. women ended the tournament with a 4-1-0 record and took two back-to-back games from top-seeded Canada to solidify the first-place finish. The games took place from April 4 to April 12.
Stack, a forward from Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, scored her first career goal for the United States in the 7-1 win over Switzerland on April 6. Schaus, a netminder from Natick, Mass., tended goal in that win. She played all 60 minutes and made one save in the victory.
In February, Stack and Schaus were two of the 27 players named to the preliminary roster and invited to a tryout and training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., held from March 24 to March 31. Schaus was one of two goalies to make the team and Stack filled one of the 11 forward spots. They are both two of the youngest players to make the squad.
The two other Hockey East players named to the roster were New Hampshire's Kacey Bellamy and Sam Faber.
