CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (11-14, 2-10 ACC) was edged by No. 17 Georgia Tech (2-5, 8-4 ACC), 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Georgia Tech starter Zach Von Tersch (3-1) worked the first 6.1 innings to earn the win. The right-hander collected three strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs to help to Yellow Jackets complete the three-game sweep of the Eagles.
James MacDonald (2-4) was tagged with the loss. The junior pitched seven innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Michael Belfiore tallied three hits in four at-bats, while Barry Butera collected two hits, including a triple.
Tony Sanchez extended his hit streak to 22 games with a base hit to left field in the eighth inning.
In the top of the first, Georgia Tech took the early lead on a RBI double by Derek Dietrich to left-center field to plate Charlie Blackmon and take a 1-0 advantage.
BC answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Butera and Belfiore hit back-to-back singles to start the frame. Von Tersch enticed a ground ball double play from Tony Sanchez, which Butera scored on to tie the game.
The Yellow Jackets manufactured a run in the second inning. MacDonald surrendered consecutive walks to Tony Plagman and Luke Murton. Both Plagman and Murton executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Later in the frame, Plagman would score on a sac fly by Chris House and lead, 2-1.
In the seventh, Tech extended their lead, 3-1. Thomas Nichols hit a two-out single through the right side to score Cole Leonida.
The Eagles made the score 3-2 in the eighth. Marc Perdios picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice. The Eagles' threat ended when Tech reliever Andrew Robinson struck out Butera with runners on the corners.
Brad Rulon worked the ninth inning to collect his third save of the season and secure the Georgia Tech victory.
BC is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 1 against Northeastern in Boston, Mass. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
