Greenville, N.C. - In the second day of tournament play, the Boston College softball team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) beat Maine (0-3), 4-3, and Ohio (2-2), 1-0, at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C.
Sophomore catcher Dani Weir highlighted the day, going 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs, a home run and a double. She started the come-back rally that gave the Eagles their first win of the season, beating Maine in the opening game. Sophomore Taylor Peyton went five strong innings against Maine, allowing only one run and striking out nine Black Bear batters. She also went 1-of-3 at the plate with a single and two walks.
BC-4, Maine-3-- The Eagles were able to pick up a thrilling come-from-behind victory against the Black Bears in the first game, scoring four unanswered runs in the top of the sixth inning. After Maine had scored once in the first, second and fifth innings, Weir started the Eagles' offensive effort by homering to left center. Freshman Carolyn Jones then singled to continue the rally. Fellow freshman Irene Delagrammaticas brought Jones home for the second run, tripling to center. Senior Amanda Booth registered her first RBIs of the season, knocking a two-run home run to center field, scoring Delagrammaticas and giving the Eagles the 4-3 edge.
Peyton (1-1) came into the game to pitch in the second inning, picking up the win. She pitched five innings, allowing one run, five hits and struck out nine batters. Junior Savana Lloyd got the start, pitching two innings. Maine's Jenna Balent (0-2) pitched all seven innings, allowing the four runs off seven hits and struck out five.
BC-1, Ohio-0-- After five scoreless innings, Weir came through again for the Eagles with an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning, scoring junior Amy Tunstall, who reached base earlier on a fielder's choice. BC went up 1-0 and never looked back. Freshman Allison Gage (1-1), allowed just five hits over six innings, picking up her first collegiate win and the shutout. Even with the Bobcats threatening to score with a runner on first and third and two outs in the seventh, she completed all seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out one.
After the two victories today, the Eagles will play in the tournament's championship game tomorrow against East Carolina at 11 a.m.
