Four Eagles Victorious In Women's Track Debut

BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston College women's track and field team made its debut at the Husky Winter Carnival on December 6 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Junior Caitlyn Bailey, freshman Kaitlyn Cooney, junior Samantha Gawrych, and senior Nikki Tufts all recorded victories in their respective events.
Bailey earned the win in the 400m dash at the event with a time of 58.57. Cooney, running in her first event at Boston College, won by over a second in the 800m with a time of 2:21.43. Gawrych also posted a victory as she clocked a 2:55.62 in the 1000m for the win and Tufts took first in the 3000m with a mark of 10:06.43.
In addition to the individual triumphs, BC ran to first place in the 4x400m relay featuring Bailey, junior Meaghan Callahan, and freshmen Anna Cioffredi and Sara Missert. The team posted a time of 3:54.04 in the event.
Cioffredi also posted a time of 25.83 in the 200m dash which was good enough for third. Sophomores Siobhan Breagy (1:18.80) and Madeline Wallace (5:09.80) also placed third in the 500m and the mile, respectively.
Freshman Heather Garcia took third behind Gawrych in the 1000m at 3:01.90 while sophomore Monica Chase finished fifth at 3:06.53.
Juniors Gretchen Andrus (10:30.81) and Jessica Rogers (10:33.60) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3000m run. Freshman Casey Harrison crossed the line right behind them with a time of 10:34.55.
Freshman Emily Cornelius performed well in her Eagle debut by clearing 3.35m in the pole vault to finish fourth. Another freshman placed in the top five in a couple of throwing events as Kelsey Huckins finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 11.85m and third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.61m.
The team's next event will be the Dartmouth Relays beginning on January 9 in Hanover, N.H.
