Mickel Picco Shoots Down Houston

Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College junior Mickel Picco scored 27 of her 29 points in the second half as the Eagles escaped with a 62-56 win over Houston in the St. John's-Chartwell Holiday Tournament on the campus of St. John's University.
Boston College improves to 8-2 and will play host St. John's at 3:00 on Sunday, Dec. 21. Houston (6-3) will play Buffalo in the consolation game.
In the first half Boston College was down 28-14 as the Eagles shot a season-low eight percent from the field (3-for-34). Freshman Jasmine Gill and junior Ayla Brown led BC with five points apiece; Gill's coming all on foul shots.
Houston shot just 38 percent as Brittney Scott had six points and Courtney Taylor added five to lead the Cougars at the half.
The second half Picco carried the Eagles as she shot 9-for-14 from the field and 6-for-8 from the three-point line. Picco's six three-pointers were her season high, one shy of her career high.
Picco started the Eagles comeback with her first three-pointer at 19:18. After a jumper by Carolyn Swords, who was in foul trouble all day, Picco nailed her second trey and BC was down by 10, 32-22. The Eagles sharpshooter hit her third three-pointer at the 16 minute mark and BC was down, 36-29. Senior Victoria Jones added to the long-distance barrage and hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to four points at 15:22.
Boston College took its first lead of the game at 10:20 when Stefanie Murphy (six points, three rebounds) hit a jumper from the baseline. A Picco three gave BC a 48-46 lead at 9:52. The Eagles went up for good when Murphy hit her first career three-pointer at the top of the arc, BC 55-53 at 3:04.
Ayla Brown (13 points, 10 rebounds) sealed the win when she hit a driving layup with one minute to play. Then on the defensive side she grabbed a loose ball and was fouled. Brown hit one foul shot and BC was up 58-53.
Game Notes:
Junior Mickel Picco has now hit a three-pointer in 17 straight games. The six three's gives Picco 108 in her career, good enough for fifth on the all-time list ... Sophomore Lauren Whitehurst played a career-high 22 minutes, grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, two steals and three blocks ... Ayla Brown notched her first double-double of the season ... Senior Corey Rusin had a career-high seven assists ... BC shot a season-low eight percent in the first half and 48 percent in the second half.
