DROP THE PUCK: No. 5/6 Boston College will break from Hockey East Association competition this Friday (and Sunday) as it prepares to host Harvard on Friday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. The Eagles will play at Dartmouth College on Sunday, Nov. 30. Game time is also set for 4 p.m.
THE HARVARD SERIES: Boston College has a 65-44-5 overall record against the Crimson in 114 games. The teams are meeting for the first time this season. Last winter, the Eagles defeated the Crimson twice. BC earned a 7-2 win at Harvard on Dec. 12 as well as a 6-5 overtime victory on Feb. 11 in the Beanpot championship game.
THE LAST MEETING (2-11-08): Nick Petrecki scored his second goal of the game -- and the second of his college career -- at 7:07 of overtime to lead BC to a 6-5 victory over Harvard on in the 56th Beanpot championship game. Brian Gibbons scored twice and was the tournament's MVP, and John Muse stopped 21 shots.
RADIO BROADCAST INFORMATION: All BC hockey games are streamed live over the internet at bceagles.com and are carried live on WROL 950 AM. Jon Rish (play-by-play) and Ken Hodge (color analyst) will call the action.
LAST TIME OUT: Freshman Casey Wellman's goal with 41 seconds left in overtime snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Massachusetts to a 4-3 Hockey East victory over fourth-ranked Boston College before a sellout crowd of 8,389 fans at the Mullins Center on Saturday, Nov. 22. BC senior Benn Ferriero tied the game at three goals apiece at 17:59 of the second period and the teams played a scoreless third period. Freshman Jimmy Hayes and senior Kyle Kucharski each scored once for the visiting Eagles.
THE POLLS: Boston College is ranked fifth by USCHO.com and sixth according to USA Today in national polls released on Monday, Nov. 24. The Eagles received the nation's top preseason billing by USA Today and USCHO.com and have not slipped lower than No. 6 in either weekly ranking.
BLISTERING PACE: With back-to-back four-point performances against Merrimack (Nov. 14) and New Hampshire (Nov. 15), senior captain Brock Bradford has recorded 20 points and 12 goals through 12 games. He leads the nation in goals per game (1.00) and ranks third among all college hockey players in points per game (1.67). The Burnaby, BC, resident's seven-game scoring streak was snapped in the team's most recent game - at Massachusetts (Nov. 22). He totaled nine goals and 14 points during that stretch.
Player of the Week (11-24-08): Senior captain Brock Bradford registered eight points - five goals and three assists - in two games two weeks ago and earned national Player of the Week honors from Inside College Hockey.com and weekly league honors from the Hockey East Association. The senior forward netted one power-play goal and four even-strength goals in BC's 1-0-1 week. He scored his first collegiate hat trick and added one assist in a 5-5 tie at Merrimack (11/14) and totaled two goals and two assists in an 8-6 home win over New Hampshire (11/15).
HAT TRICKS, HAT TRICKS: Brock Bradford (Nov. 14 vs. Merrimack) and Jimmy Hayes (Nov. 15 vs. New Hampshire) netted hat tricks in consecutive games, marking the first time since Dec. 1, 2007 that BC has had hat tricks in consecutive games. Nathan Gerbe netted a hat trick against Boston University on Nov. 30 and Ben Smith scored three times against the Terriers the following night.
POWER PLAY: BC has scored 19 power-play goals in 12 games and is converting its chances at a 21.1 percent rate (19-for-90). That mark ranks third among national leaders. BC has scored multiple man-advantage goals in seven of its 12 games this season. Individually, senior Brock Bradford and sophomore Brian Gibbons are the top power-play producers, having totaled eight points apiece in man-advantage situations. Bradford is the team's top goal scorer in power-play situations with five power-play goals in 12 games.
PENALTY KILL: BC has killed 86.0 percent (49-of-57) of its opponent power plays. In penalty-killing situations, Bradford and Gibbons have each registered two points - one goal and one assist - while junior Matt Price has also scored a shorthanded goal for BC.
FROM THE FACEOFF DOT: Boston College has averaged a win at the faceoff circle 48.6 percent (409-of-841) of the time through the team's first 12 games. Junior center Ben Smith has an impressive 57.2 percent (103-for-180) win rate. Freshman center Paul Carey, who has taken 63 faceoffs in 10 games, has amassed a 61.9 percent win rate (39-of-63).
THE COACH: Jerry York is in his 37th season as a head coach and his 15th season at Boston College. He is the second winningest coach in NCAA history and first among active Division I coaches. He has an 810-519-85 career record and a 343-184-51 mark as coach of the Eagles. York is a 1967 graduate of Boston College where he was a three-year letterman and earned All-America and All-New England first-team honors in 1966-67.
THE SENIORS: BC's Class of 2009 is comprised of seven seniors - F Brock Bradford, F Benn Ferriero, D Tim Filangieri, D Anthony Aiello, D Tim Kunes, F Kyle Kucharski and F Andrew Orpik. It has captured two Hockey East Tournament titles, advanced to all three Frozen Fours and earned the 2008 national title. The class enters Friday's game against Harvard with a combined record of 87-40-13.
THE CAPTAINS: Brock Bradford serves as team captain in 2008-09. He is joined by assistant captains Benn Ferriero and Tim Filangieri.
THE GOALIE: Boston College's goaltending duties are in the firm grasp of sophomore John Muse. Muse played in all 2,725 minutes in net during the team's 44-game 2007-08 campaign. He led all goaltenders in the nation in that category and totaled a BC single-season record 1,171 saves. Through 12 games in 2008-09, Muse owns a 3.04 goals against average and a .894 save percentage.
