Durham, N.H. - The Boston College Women's Ice Hockey team tied the University of Newhampshire 2-2 in overtime on Wednesday night at the Whittemore Center. UNH won in the shootout to give them two points in Hockey East Standings to BC's one.
UNH got on the board first netting a shorthanded goal at 11:01 in the first period. BC was awarded a power play on a tripping call and senior forward Sam Faber managed to breakup BC's power play and went streaking down the ice on the breakaway beating goalie Molly Schaus high on the right.
BC retaliated less than a minute later when junior forward Kelli Stack scored her second power play goal of the season at 11:45 in the first to even the score at one apiece. Junior forward Allie Thunstrom and freshman Danielle Welch were credited with the assist.
The Eagles took the lead at 17:42 in the frame when Stack scored her second goal of the game, fourth on the season with the assist credited to Thunstrom and senior defenseman Maggie Taverna. BC entered the first intermission leading 2-1.
The Wildcats spent the majority of the second period in the penalty box giving BC a man advantage for much of the frame. Despite several solid opportunities by the offense, the Eagles were unable to convert any of their chances and the teams headed to the locker rooms with BC leading 2-1.
Entering the third period, BC was 7-7 on the penalty kill but when the Eagles were whistled for checking, the Wildcats used the man advantage to tie the score at 2-2. Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the period and the Eagles advanced to a five minute overtime period for the second time in three games this season.
The Eagles battled hard through the overtime but were unable to come up with an advantage. With the score tied at 2 at the end of the overtime the new Hockey East shootout rule was put into effect.
In the event of an overtime tie in Women's Hockey East in the 2008-09 season, the two teams will commence with a three player shootout to determine the winner. The game is still considered a tie for NCAA purposes.
UNH used their home ice advantage to shoot second in the contest. Freshman Allison Szlosek was up first for the Eagles. Her shot was stopped by Wildcats goaltender Kayley Herman and she was unable to stuff the rebound under the goalie's pads. BC and UNH's first three shooters were all stopped and the shootout advanced to single player rotation. After five shots BC was unable to score and UNH's Kacey Bellamy managed to slip the puck between Schaus and the pipes to give UNH the win.
The Eagles return to the Heights on Saturday, October 11 at 4 p.m. to take on RPI in a non-conference match-up.
