Senior setter Brittany Pierpont of the volleyball team recently passed Jessica Brizzolara on the BC career assists list and is currently fourth all-time with 2237 assists. Pierpont and the Eagles (6-9, 0-3 ACC) host Virginia on Friday at 7:00 pm.
Congratulations on moving into fourth place all time on the BC assists list. What does that mean to you, having all the assists that you've had during your career?
I think a lot of that has to do with my teammates. A lot of my assists come from my liberos and our defensive players. I'm able to get those assists because of their digs to set up the hitters. I'm happy about it. My goal is to move up to third on the list.
There are a lot of new faces in the program this year with seven newcomers, six of them freshmen. How well have you been able to build chemistry as a team so far this season?
It's been a little difficult, but I think we're all starting to gel now. This class brings in a lot of energy, a lot of determination, and a lot of hard work. That's what BC volleyball is all about.
Two freshmen lead the team in key categories - Jordan Meredith leads the team with 184 kills, and Brennan Clark leads the team with 219 digs. Talk about their contributions to the team thus far.
They're both extremely competitive. Brennan has very good range. She's a very smart player in that she's able to see her hitters well. Jordan is a phenomenal athlete. You can feel her drive out there on the court. They're both impact players.
You're nearing the halfway point of the season. What are some of the goals of the team heading into the heart of ACC play?
I think one of the goals for us is to finish above .500. We also want to beat every team in the ACC at least once, because we play everyone twice. We had a really good home record last season so we want to have the same record or better at home this year. We talk about home pride a lot.
The Eagles ran into two ACC teams that are playing very well right now, NC State and North Carolina, last weekend. What is it going to take to bounce back against Virginia?
We've been talking a lot about momentum. If we lose a point, we can't get down on ourselves. With those teams we were right there with them but we would let them get a little run and then we couldn't fight back. What we've practicing is to not let our opponents get more than two points in a row.
Virginia has a new coach, Lee Maes, a former assistant at Nebraska. Has that affected how you prepare for them?
They ran a five-one with just one setter last season. Now they have two different setters. It's always a different look because every setter is different with the way that they run the offense.
What has been the toughest place that you've played so far this season?
I would say Yale for sure. The fans were not only loud, but didn't have good sportsmanship. They were yelling some really rude things.
What are some of your goals for the remainder of the season?
One would be to finish third all-time in assists. Another would be to make this season the best that I've had thus far. That would be to get the most assists I've had in one season, to get my team to have a better home record, and to lead this team.
What's the biggest thing that you'll miss about playing volleyball at BC?
I would have to say my teammates, for sure. We are very close. We do everything together. We're a family unit. I'm really going to miss it.
What are your plans after you graduate from BC?
Well that's kind of up in the air right now! I'm thinking about going and playing over in Europe, or playing beach volleyball. I may get into sports modeling, or I may take a couple more classes and go to dental school.
