Raleigh, NC -
Senior Caitlin Hiler scored her second goal of the season to lead Boston College past NC State, 1-0, in an ACC match at NC State Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles improved to 3-2-1 in the ACC and 9-3-2 overall. NC State is now 8-7-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the ACC.
The Eagles have not lost to NC State since joining the conference. BC also has not let up a goal against the Wolfpack in all four meetings.
Boston College struck early as Hiler scored just 11:49 into the match. Sophomore defender Hannah Cerrone's cross landed on the foot of Hiler. The Eagles midfielder then lofted a shot into the far right corner over the NC State goalkeeper Rachell Barnette (seven saves) for the only goal of the match. Hiler now has two goals and five assists for a career-high nine points.
The Eagles out shot NC State at the half 9-3, while firing four shots on goal.
In the second half, Boston College continued to attack. Freshman Julia Bouchelle's chance just four minutes in off a corner kick was smothered by Barnette. Bouchelle led the Eagles with four shots, three on goal.
Kelly Henderson and Natalie Crutchfield each had chances to increase BC's lead but both shots were stopped by Barnette. Junior Gina DiMartino ripped a shot with minutes remaining as a diving Barnette kept her team within one goal.
The Eagles defense played tough again as the line of Caroline Walden, Brianna Wilson-Byrne, Hannah Cerrone and Alyssa Pember held the Wolfpack to just three shots, while the BC offense had 16 shots. Boston College also had seven corner kicks, while NC State was held to zero.
Boston College freshman goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni had two saves and earned her sixth shutout of her career.
