Newton, Mass.--No. 10 Boston College defeated Maine, 5-0, on Senior Day, Sunday, Sept. 30. The team improved to 8-3, 5-2 on the Newton Campus Turf Field.
The Eagles and Black Bears battled for the first six minutes of the game, playing the ball mostly in the middle of the field. Junior forward Bob Dirks knocked in the first shot of the game to give BC a 1-0 lead on a high blast to the left corner of the net.
Ten minutes later, sophomore forward Caitlyn Buckanavage notched the Eagles' second goal off a dish from Dirks. The play started on a long hit, and as Dirks passed the ball into the circle for Buckanavage, Maine goalkeeper Maygan Cassarino came out of the cage. Buckanavage slipped the ball by Cassarino for her third goal of the season.
Boston College kept Maine shotless in the first half, while recording seven shots of their own.
In the second half, junior midfielder Katie Quaglia notched her first goal of 2007 on a penalty corner. Senior midfield Tara Fernandes inserted to Quaglia, who controlled the ball and took a shot from the top of the circle that easily found the back of the net in the 43rd minute of play. The assist was Fernanades' first on the season.
The Eagles did not let up and three minutes later, senior midfield Caitlyn Young netted the fourth goal of the game off an assist from junior forward Kathleen Murphy. Murphy dribbled toward the net on the right baseline and as Cassarino came out, she dished to Young for the score. Murphy recorded her first assist of the season and Young scored her first goal on the year.
The final BC goal came on a penalty stroke. Dirks scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute of play. The goal marked the third time she has converted a penalty stroke in as many attempts.
The Eagles finished the day with 15 shots and only allowed the Black Bears one. Cassarino recorded six saves in the contest.
Head Coach Ainslee Lamb was pleased with her team's recovery from Friday night's 3-2 loss to Duke.
"This was a tremendous recovery," Lamb said. "This game showed the depth of this program. Anyone can step on the field and maintain or even elevate the level of play."
Boston College takes on Providence on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Newton.
