NEWTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Sherron Manswell scored both Boston College goals to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 ACC victory over seventh-ranked Maryland at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
The game marked the conference opener for both teams. The game also capped a day that featured three Boston College-Maryland contests. BC defeated the Terrapins, 3-2, in volleyball, while the Maryland field hockey team downed BC, 2-0. All three games were hosted by Boston College.
Maryland controlled play in the early part of the match, but BC capitalized on its chance at 25:03. Manswell split two Terrapin defenders and beat freshman goalkeeper Thorne Holder. Junior Paul Gerstenberger assisted on the score.
Just more than three minutes later -- at 28:41 -- Manswell doubled the BC margin. Junior Alejandro Bedoya dribbled down the right side and fed the ball to freshman Shawn Chin in front of him. Chin delivered a cross into the box where Manswell collected the ball and beat the Maryland keeper to the left side. The goal was the senior striker's third of the season.
BC was outshot 5-3 in the first half, but settled down late in the half and more than held its own in the second half. Maryland finished with a 9-7 shot edge.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Brown earned his third win of the season, making two stops. Brown's goals against average now stands at 0.50.
Holder made one second-half save for the Terps.
Boston College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 against Maine. The non-league match will start at 4 p.m. on the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
