Field Hockey Wins Home-Opener Against Quinnipiac, 3-1

Newton, Mass. -- No. 9 Boston College defeated Quinnipiac, 3-1, on Friday, Aug. 31 in front of its first home crowd of the season. This is the Eagles' second win in a row and gives them a 2-1 record.
Junior forward Bob Dirks started BC off on the right foot, scoring 2:25 into the game on an unassisted goal. Dirks notched her first goal of the season on a breakaway, as she dodged defenders to take a direct shot on the goalie, Jenna Grossman.
Quinnipiac answered less than two minutes later with a goal of its own. Christine Grady evened the score with her unassisted goal that she launched from the top of the circle. Grady's goal marked the first time the Bobcats have scored against the Eagles in their four meetings.
The Eagles out-shot the Bobcats in the first half, 11-4, yet the scored remained tied at the break.
It took the Eagles almost the entire second half to notch their next two goals. With 7:14 remaining in the contest, senior back Kelley Smith capitalized off a penalty corner to put BC up by one. Dirks faked a shot at the top of the circle and fed to Smith for the go-ahead goal.
It didn't take Boston College long to add to their lead. After only 3:49 had elapsed, sophomore forward Chelsey Feole received an insertion from junior forward Kathleen Murphy on the Eagles' eighth corner attempt in the second half. Feole took a hard shot at the goal and senior forward Crystal Frates deflected the ball over Grossman's head. The insurance goal marked Frates' fifth point of the season. Feole's assist gave her five points in 2007 as well.
The Eagles ended the day with 12 corners, converting on two. They also out-shot the Bobcats in the second half, 17-3. Junior goalkeeper, Julia Berkowitz, had three saves in the contest.
Boston College plays its second home game of the season against Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1:00 p.m.
