Courtney Kennedy, a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic women's ice hockey team who most recently served as head girls' hockey coach at the Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School, has been named assistant women's ice hockey coach at Boston College, according to an announcement made by Boston College head women's hockey coach Katie King.
A native of Woburn, Mass., Kennedy played alongside King on the 2002 and 2006 U.S. Olympic Teams. Team USA captured the silver medal in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002, and gained the bronze medal in Turin, Italy in 2006.
Prior to her Olympic experiences, Kennedy twice earned All-America honors as a defenseman at the University of Minnesota (1999 and 2001). She capped her senior year - 2000-01 - by gaining Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Kennedy was a Top 3 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award (as the most outstanding college player) that same year.
Kennedy began her collegiate career at Colby (Maine) College, before transferring to the University of Minnesota prior to her sophomore year. She completed her three-year career with the Gophers with 112 points - 35 goals and 77 assists - in 106 games. She finished with an amazing plus-136 plus/minus rating, helping Minnesota win its first-ever women's national title in 2000.
Kennedy, who served three years as the head girls' hockey coach at her alma mater, BB&N (2003-07 with one year off to play in Olympics), has also served as a coach at several USA Hockey Select Festivals.
Kennedy was inducted into the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 10, 2002.
