CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Eagles took on their second non-conference opponent in as many days and defeated the Dartmouth College Big Green, 12-6 this afternoon at Shea Field. The win is the Eagles' eighth in their last 10 games and improves their overall record to 20-23-1 heading into this weekend's series at Clemson.
After getting the first two outs in the top of the first, BC starter Kurt Hayer walked the bases loaded and then surrendered a single up the middle to give Dartmouth an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Michael Belfiore erased that deficit in the bottom of the frame as he homered to left field with Ryan Hutchinson on base, tying the game at 2-2.
Eric Campbell followed Belfiore with a double down the left field line and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Pete Frates, giving BC their first lead, 3-2.
The Eagles' bats continued to stay hot as Brandon Ziemann, Harry Darling, and Ryan Hutchinson all doubled to begin the bottom of the second, extending BC's lead to 5-2.
An RBI single from Mike Belfiore, an RBI double from Joe Ayers and a two RBI single from Jared McGuire gave the Eagles a 9-2 cushion after two innings.
Hayer would struggle with his command walking four batters in a row to start the top of the third. He would benfit from a double play ball but Damon Wright would come in from third, cutting the Eagles' lead to six, 9-3.
A Brett Wright single, followed by another walk, made it 9-5 Eagles and knocked Hayer out of the game.
BC tacked on a run in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 10-5. Ryan Hutchinson and Mike Belfiore both reached on errors and Eric Campbell singled through the left side, pushing the Eagles' lead back to five runs.
The Eagles would tack on two more runs, including a solo home run from Jared McGuire, his fourth of the season, as their bats once again propelled them to victory.
BC is back in action on Saturday, May 5 when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for a key three game series with the Tigers. Game one is saturday at 7:15 p.m.
