Newton, Mass.--Boston College women's lacrosse snapped a four-game losing streak, and halted Marist's four-game winning streak, on Saturday afternoon with a 9-8 win over the Red Foxes at the Newton Campus Complex. The Eagles' Katie Monaghan and Marist's Liz Burkhard combined for 31 saves.
The win improves the Eagles' record to 5-7 and drops the Red Foxes to 5-4. Boston College is 3-1 this season on home turf and will play the next two ACC matches in Newton. The Eagles welcome Duke on Saturday, April 14 and Virginia on Saturday, April 21. Both games begin at 1:00 p.m.
Rookie Sarah Sedgwick netted the first of her three goals at 21:25 when she converted one of the Eagles' 13 free position shots. Sedgwick's tally tied the score, 1-1. Sophomores Lauren Fitzpatrick and Jenna McCabe each notched goals for a half-time score of 3-3.
Marist's Lindsey Diener quickly put the Red Foxes ahead just 15 seconds into the second half. Sedgwick came back to tie the score once again at 27:00, and freshman Lauren Costello gave the Eagles a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game. At 11:42 senior Elizabeth Kadison took a free position shot and buried it in the back of the net to keep a 12-game point-scoring streak alive. After Kadison's goal, Marist netted the last two goals of the game to begin a rally, but could not score again in the final 6:52 to even the score.
The Eagles outshot the Red Foxes, 38-26, for the game, including 20-10 in the second half. Monaghan shut out Marist on free position shots in the second half, as the Red Foxes went 0-for-3 in those situations. Monaghan made 13 saves on the day, while Burkhard stopped 18 shots in the Red Foxes' goal.
