Blue Devils Trip Up Women's Lacrosse, 16-8

Newton, Mass.--Women's lacrosse fell in ACC action on Saturday afternoon as the Duke Blue Devils doubled up on the Eagles, 16-8. With a 23-9 shot advantage in the second half, Boston College outshot Duke, 29-28 for the game, but slipped to 1-3 in conference play and 5-8 overall.
The Blue Devils improved to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. Both teams have one more league game to play before the ACC Championships begin on April 26. The Eagles host Virginia next Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
The Eagles controlled the first five draws of the game and notched the first goal of the afternoon when sophomore Lauren Fitzpatrick beat Duke goalie Kim Imbesi at 29:25. The Blue Devils responded by reeling off the next seven goals before sophomore Jenna McCabe struck at 12:14. Boston College went into the half in a 10-2 hole. The Eagles turned the ball over 16 times in the first frame and took 11 fouls.
Duke opened the second period with another goal to build their lead, 11-2. Fitzpatrick won the ensuing draw and sprinted down field to respond with an Eagle goal. Caroline Cryer netted two goals and Carolyn Davis and Allie Johnson each scored once in the next 10 minutes for Duke. The Blue Devils led by as many as 12 goals with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Boston College tallied five of the game's last six goals to stage a late-game rally. McCabe hit the back of the net twice during the rally to cap a hat trick. Sophomores Emily Hannigan and Maura Mahoney, and freshmen Sarah Sedgwick and Lauren Costello each picked up points in the last 6:08 of the game to bring the Eagles to within eight goals.
Sophomore Katie Monaghan started the game in net for the Eagles, making five saves and allowing 11 goals in 39:30. Junior Courtney Zwirko played 20:30 late in the first half and the beginning of the second half and made two saves. Duke's Imbesi and Regan Bosch combined for 11 saves. Imbesi earned the start and the win.
