WEYMOUTH, Mass. - Women's tennis headed to Weymouth looking to knock off No. 51 Long Beach State but instead dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the 49ers last night at the Weymouth Club. The loss is the Eagles' seventh in a row and drops their overall record to 4-12. The 49ers improve to 12-8 on the season with the win.
Long Beach began the day by winning all three doubles matches, which would prove critical, to jump to a 1-0 lead. At No.1 doubles, Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov dropped a difficult 9-8 (6) decision to Stephanie Bengson and Katy Williams. At the No. 2 flight, Alina Sullivan and Lana Krasnopolsky would also drop a heartbreaker, 9-8 (5) to Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks. The 49ers would complete the sweep at No. 3 doubles as Sandra Rocha and Rachael Porsz won 8-3 over Brittany Delaney and Gia Nafarrete.
In singles play the match came down to the No. 1 singles flight. Hannah Grady, ranked #122 in the country, faced off against Lana Krsnopolsky and won a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory to give the 49ers their fourth point of the day. Jessica Weeks would prevail at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Alina Sullivan and Porsz defeated Gia Nafarrete at No. 6 singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
