CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After handing the Hokies a 6-3 decision in game one, the Eagles were limited to one run on six hits in game two as they dropped a 6-1 decision in game two to split this afternoon's doubleheader against Virginia Tech. After this afternoon's contests, the Eagles enter tomorrow's game with an overall record of 17-23-1 and 10-13 in conference play. The Hokies will come in at 18-25 overall and 5-18 in ACC action.
The Eagles put single runs on the board in the second, third, and fourth innings of game one to take a 3-0 lead. The bottom of the fifth inning would yield two more runs on three hits for BC, spotting starter Kevin Boggan a 5-0 lead.
However, the Hokies would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth, pulling them to within two, 5-3. BC quickly got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice bunt from Tony Sanchez That would be enough support for the Eagles as James MacDonald came in to relieve Boggan, and picked up a two inning save - his first of the season -to give BC the 6-3 game one win.
Game two would reverse fortunes for both teams as the Virginia Tech bats woke up for six runs on 12 hits. With the game knotted at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, the Hokies would wear down Eagles starter Nate Jeanes as they got to him for four runs on five hits, pulling ahead 5-1.
Tech would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth and that would be all they would need as starter Andrew Wells pitched all nine innings, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out four.
The two squads will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
