Another Strong Weekend of Races for Sailing

For the third consecutive year, the BC Women's Sailing Team has qualified for their National Championships. Becky Mergenthaler '07 and crews Mallory Fontenot '08 & Brooke Dow '07 led the team effort at the New England Conference Championships, turning in a personal-best 2nd place finish in B division. Martha Pitt '09/Lilly Beck '09 sailed to 5th in the tightly packed A division, just three points out of third. The 3rd place overall finish qualified the Eagles for the Nationals, May 23-25 at Old Dominion University.

The coed team staged yet another strong comeback on Sunday to take 2nd place at the Thompson Trophy. Adam Roberts '09/Aly Whitehead '07 in A division and Reed Johnson '08/Julie Howe'08 both stepped it up on day two. After Saturday's racing, the Eagles found themselves in 9th place with some very deep finishes. Consistent sailing on Sunday, including six top three finishes, helped the Eagles climb the leader board all day, ending up in 2nd, just 18 points off the lead.

Freshmen Evan Cooke and Field Osler took 3rd in their spring freshman championships, the Priddy Trophy. This rounds out an impressive year for BC's freshman class - 2nd at the Nickerson Trophy, 1st at the Freshman Atlantic Coast Championships for the third consecutive year (winning both divisions), and 3rd at the Priddy Trophy.

Back in Boston, the all-sophomore team of Brian Kamilar/Andrew Schneider and Parker Dwyer/Allison Nagle finished 4th at the Morris Trophy Intersectional at BU. The Eagles jumped out to a first-day lead, but struggled in the shifty conditions on Sunday and dropped to 4th. Home team Boston University won the event, followed by Yale and the University of South Florida.

The Coed team looks to qualify for Team Race Nationals this weekend at Harvard, and the regular season wraps up on May 5-6 with the Coed Dinghy Nationals qualifier and Conference Championships at Coast Guard.
