Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team fell 9-6 to Dartmouth this afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles started freshman Taylor Peyton, while Dartmouth threw Stephanie Trudeau.
The Eagles scored twice in the first with a little help from Dartmouth. Freshman leadoff hitter Blair Destito reached on a throwing error by Dartmouth shortstop Christy Autin and took second. Junior Amanda Booth then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move her up to third. Senior Jenna Macchi reached on a bunt single and stole second to move into scoring position. After senior Britney Thompson struck out for the second out, sophomore Renee Ramos strode to the plate. Ramos, who won yesterday's game with a dramatic extra-inning homerun, picked up where she left off by whacking a triple to right field to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
Meanwhile, Peyton cruised the first three innings, not allowing a runner past second base.
The Big Green broke through in the fourth, when Macchi made a bases-loaded fielding error that allowed two runs to score.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the fourth when senior Ashley Obrest came home on a passed ball, giving BC the 3-2 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Dartmouth put Peyton in a bases-loaded jam with two outs. Katie Chifcian crushed a Peyton pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam that put Dartmouth ahead 6-3.
Thompson, who came on in relief of Peyton after the grand slam, hit a homerun of her own in the bottom of the fifth to pull BC to within two at 6-4.
Dartmouth's Alyssa Parker hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to extend the Dartmouth lead to 9-4.
The Eagles did nothing in their half of the sixth, but got things going in the seventh. Booth drew a one-out walk and was singled over to second by Macchi. Thompson then laced a single through the right side, scoring Booth. Macchi then scored on an error by Dartmouth, pulling the Eagles to within 9-6, but freshman Amy Tunstall struck out to end the game.
Peyton took the loss, dropping to 2-9 on the year. Thompson's homerun was her team-leading tenth of the season, drawing her closer to the school-record 14 hit by Kara Blumfeld in 2001.
This game was supposed to be the first game of a doubleheader, but the nightcap was cancelled due to rain. The Eagles play at home again tomorrow, when they host Harvard at 3pm at Shea Field.
