Pike's Peak Club Hosts 58th Annual Hockey Banpuet

The Boston College hockey team celebrated the 2006-07 season on Sunday afternoon with the 58th Pike's Peak Hockey Club Banquet at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Mass. The Pike's Peak Hockey Club, the program's booster organization, sponsored the event. BC also recognized the 25th anniversary team of 1981-82 and the 50th anniversary team of 1956-57.
Senior forward Brian Boyle and junior goaltender Cory Schneider shared the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award as the team's most valuable player. Dailey was a goaltender on BC's 1949 national championship team.
Senior forward Joe Rooney and junior defenseman Mike Brennan shared the John "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award as the individuals who best typify Boston College hockey. Kelley was the legendary BC manager, player and coach.
Sophomore forward Benn Ferriero earned the William J. Flynn Coaches Award, decided upon by head coach Jerry York and his staff. Flynn was a former BC student-athlete, faculty member, coach and athletics director.
Sophomore forwards Brock Bradford and Nathan Gerbe shared the James E. Tiernan Award as the team's most improved player. Tiernan was the most valuable player in the 1956 Beanpot.
Freshman forward Ben Smith earned the Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award, named in honor of the former BC goalie and long-time freshman coach. Burke had his jersey retired during the 2006-07 season.
Senior defenseman Justin Greene was presented with the Academic Excellence Award as the senior with the highest grade point average. Greene will graduate with a bachelor's degree in sociology (and a minor in history) next month.
Pike's Peak Club president Richard Schoenfeld '74 opened the program by making a special presentation to club member Fred Kinsman '67, recognizing Kinsman's exceptional dedication to the club and the hockey program.
York concluded the affair with some remarks and the introduction of the 2007-08 team captains - captain Mike Brennan, and assistant captains Dan Bertram, Matt Greene and Cory Schneider.
"I really feel proud of this particular club," York said. "This team had it all."
Boston College finished the 2006-07 season with a 29-12-1 record. The Eagles captured the Hockey East tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Frozen Four for the third time in the last four seasons.
Fr. Jack Harrington '79 delivered the invocation and Fr. Tony Penna '70 delivered the benediction.
Presenting the awards were distinguished former players: Rob Riley '78, Mark Riley '75, Lee Blossom '83 and Vin Shanley '72. Shanley presented the Snooks Kelley Memorial Award with the able assistance of Patrick McLaughlin, the grandson of the Eagle coaching legend.
