Durham, N.H.--Third seed Providence College pulled off the upset over second-seeded Boston College Saturday afternoon in the second Women's Hockey East Tournament semifinal game at the Whittemore Center. The Friars (16-15-4) advanced to the Championship Game and will face New Hampshire on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Eagles (23-9-2) will await the NCAA Championship selection on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. to determine whether their post season will continue.
Providence took the first three penalties of the game beginning with a hooking call on Erin Normore at 8:21. The Eagles weren't able to get a solid flow going in their first power play opportunity, but the two minutes did end in an ominous scrum in front of Friar goaltender Jana Bugden.
The Friars' Katy Beach took the next PC penalty at 13:39 for holding and BC pressured the goal much harder than in the first man-up opportunity. Half-way through the power play, Allie Thunstrom sent a pass to the slot from the right wing for Becky Zavisza to slap a shot towards the net. Bugden made the save to send Providence fans clamoring to their feet.
Kristin Gigliotti took another PC penalty at 17:16 only to be offset 29 seconds later by Meghan Fardelmann's interference penalty. The Friars killed off all three first period penalties. The Eagles outshot PC, 15-3, in the first 20:00, helped by the fact that PC did not get off their first shot on goal until 12:30
The Boston College special teams unit finally converted come the second period. During the Eagles' fifth power play opportunity of the afternoon, defenseman Maggie Taverna took a slapshot from the point for BC's first goal. Anna McDonald initiated the play from the left corner and Kelli Stack floated the pass to Taverna for the assists. A minute and a half later Thunstrom notched her fifth shorthanded goal of the season after knocking down a Gigliotti pass with her stick near the BC blue line and racing up the ice. Thunstrom's shot ricochet hard off of both pipes before trickling into the net to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Providence quickly nixed the Eagle lead with back-to-back power play goals. Mari Pehkonen's goal at 12:37 came while the Friars were playing with a 5v3 advantage. Pehkonen slipped the puck in the backdoor as BC goaltender Molly Schaus was focusing on Gigliotti and Sarah Feldman coming up the left wing. Twenty-one seconds later, Keilch converted on the power play with help from Kathleen Smith.
Providence freshman Jackie Duncan scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway just 1:24 into the final frame. Duncan stole the puck from BC defenseman Gaby Beaudry who lost her footing and was not able to skate back in time to prevent the goal.
The Eagles outshot the Friars, 35-27, but went 2-for-4 on the power play. Boston College went 1-for-6 on their power play opportunities. Bugden made 33 saves in the win, while Schaus made 24 saves on the other end of the ice. -BC-
