Boston, Mass.--Boston College women's lacrosse fell, 9-7, to Boston University Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field despite having a 4-2 lead at halftime. The loss drops the Eagles to 4-5 overall and hands them their first back-to-back losses of the season.
Sophomore Emily Hannigan and senior Elizabeth Kadison each netted two goals. Both Eagles own nine-game point-scoring streaks going into the ACC match-up against North Carolina this Sunday, April 1, beginning at noon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
BU's McKinley Curro scored the game's first goal at 26:27, but the Eagles won the next draw control to gain possession of the ball for the next three minutes. In that span of possession, Boston College earned two free position attempts and Hannigan converted on the second attempt at 23:15. The score remained tied at one goal each until Terrier Traci Landy scored the first of her three goals at 14:44. Curro earned the assist.
The Eagles struck to even the score up again just 40 seconds later when the Terriers committed a team turnover in their offensive end to give the Eagles the head start. Junior Shauna Culhane dished a pass to Kadison to tally the equalizer. Hannigan scored at 10:38 to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead, and sophomore Lauren Fitzpatrick extended it to two goals at 3:40. The only scoring opportunity for the Terriers in that span was taken away with a turnover caused by Hannigan with about five minutes to go in the period.
Boston College continued to roll when sophomore Jenna McCabe scored the Eagles' fifth goal of the game with just one minute elapsed in the second half. The 5-2 lead would be the largest of the game for the Eagles. The Terriers, though, rattled off six of the next seven goals to pull ahead, 8-6, with 11:33 left in the game. BU won four straight draw controls, giving the Eagles a difficult time gaining possession of the ball. The game went scoreless for about 10 minutes before McCabe netted her second goal at 1:04 and gave the Eagles renewed hope. Sophomore Margot Spatola passed the ball to McCabe from the top of the circle to earn the assist. BU won the ensuing draw control and notched an insurance goal with five seconds left to come away with the win.
Sophomore Katie Monaghan played the full 60:00 for the Eagles in goal and made six saves. Jenna Golden made nine stops in the winning effort for the Terriers. -BC-
