Newton, Mass.--The visiting Massachusetts Minutewomen (5-4) snapped the Eagles' unbeaten home streak this season by rallying to defeat Boston College women's lacrosse in overtime, 10-9. Holly Drown netted the game-winning goal, her third of the game, with just 12 seconds remaining in the first extra session. Freshman Lauren Costello led the Eagles (4-4) in scoring with five points on four goals and an assist.
Boston College led, 8-6, at halftime and led by as many as three goals on two occasions. Massachusetts' Melynda Zwick got the scoring started at 26:57, but sophomore Jenna McCabe responded 20 seconds later for the first of five ties on the afternoon. Kathleen Typadis and Costello traded unassisted goals within a minute of each other for a 2-2 draw.
With the score still tied, at four goals apiece, sophomore Emily Hannigan gave the Eagles a 5-4 advantage when her shot on goal bounced by Minutewomen goalie Lauren McCarthy. Boston College would not trail again in the game until the final tally in overtime. Costello continued to build upon the Eagle lead at 8:59. Her shot from the right of the goal still managed to find the back of the net despite Costello being off-balance and falling forward while taking it. Senior Elizabeth Kadison converted for the only Eagle free position goal three and a half minutes later.
Momentum began to swing in the Minutewomen's favor when with four minutes remaining in the first half, Julie Papaleo caused a turnover at midfield, picked up a ground ball, and sprinted up the field to connect with the back of the net.
UMass scored three of the four goals in the second period, including Typadis' game-tying goal at 2:53. While the Eagles outshot the Minutewomen in the first half, 14-9, the visitors came back to outshoot Boston College, 9-7, in the second frame. Kadison was a split second away from giving the home team a win in the last play of regulation. Kadison buried a shot past McCarthy to ignite a celebration among the Eagles, but the officials called back the goal, as the senior did not get the shot off before time expired on the clock.
Overtime was scoreless until Drown scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left on the clock.
Boston College travels down Commonwealth Ave. to play Boston University this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
