TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Baseball headed back down to Florida yesterday to take on top-ranked Florida State, but dropped the first of a three game set, 5-1 to the Seminoles. The Eagles fall to 6-9-1 overall with the loss and 4-2 in conference play. Florida State improves to an impressive 24-1 and 4-0 in ACC action.
The Seminoles got off to a good start versus Eagles' starter Kevin Boggan as they staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the third as both Tony Thomas and Mark Hallberg singled bringing up Buster Posey. The FSU catcher followed with the third straight hit as Florida State broke in front 1-0.
FSU starter Bryan Henry's first walk of the game turned out to be costly as it was followed by an RBI double by Jared McGuire knotting the game at 1-1 in the fourth. A deep fly ball from Eric Campbell out moved McGuire to third with one away but BC could not capitalize as the senior got out of the inning with no further damage.
FSU mustered another two -out run to go on top in the fifth and strung together a double and single in the bottom of the sixth increasing their lead to 3-1. The Seminoles would again put runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh, and again would take advantage as Guinn singled, giving the Seminoles a 4-1 lead.
The Eagles could not muster any offense off o FSU starter Bryan Henry, who pitched eight innings, allowing only four hits and one run. Eagles starter Kevin Boggan would pitch seven innings, allowing only three earned runs, but it would prove not to be enough.
Florida State and Boston College will continue their series Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast in Tallahassee on FSN Florida. Fans can follow all the action over the Internet. Gametracker will be available for the contest.
