NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Baseball opened its season this afternoon in Nashville, Tenn., where they took on the Belmont Bruins, but unfortunately dropped an 8-7 decision in their first game of the Music City Classic. Belmont improves to 3-0 with the win, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.
The Bruins would get to starter Kevin Boggan early, as they would benefit from an error which led to two runs, one unearned to take a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Eagles would get one run back in the top of the next inning , as shortstop Ryan Hutchinson collected his first RBI of the season, bringing home Mike Belfiore.
After the Bruins took a 3-1 lead after three innings, BC answered again in the top of the fourth , tying the score at 4-4 on a Jett Ruiz solo home run and an RBI double by freshman Tony Sanchez.
The two teams would exchange leads the next couple of innings, with neither team able to pull away. With BC clinging to a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom half of the eighth, the Bruins would take advantage of three walks, scoring three runs on two hits, and took an 8-6 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
The Eagles quickly got one run back, as freshman Mike Belfiore doubled down the right field line, and then later scored on a single by Johnny Ayers. However, BC could not muster another run, as Belmont would retire the next two hitters and hold on for the 8-7 win.
Juniors Ryan Hutchinson and Jett Ruiz collected two hits apiece for BC and freshman Michael Belfiore chipped in two hits in his collegiate debut. Senior Matt Reynolds paced Belmont with three hits.
The Eagles are quickly back in action, as they take on Lipscomb University tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. CT, in Nashville, Tenn.
