Chestnut Hill, Mass.--The Connecticut Huskies defeated the tenth-ranked women's ice hockey, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum in a Hockey East match-up. With the win, the Huskies leap-frogged the Eagles (19-7-2. 12-6-0) in the league standings.
Freshman Kelli Stack and sophomore Meghan Fardelmann tallied the Boston College goals while freshman Anna McDonald assisted on both.
UConn (17-11-2, 12-4-1) got on the board first at 3:19 when Amy Hollstein beat Eagle goalie Molly Schaus with help from point-leader Jaclyn Hawkins and Dominique Thibault. The Eagles responded before the end of the first frame at 9:19. McDonald weaved the puck up past center ice and fed it to Stack on the right wing. Stack crossed over in front of Brittany Wilson and backhanded a shot into the goal for the equalizer.
The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 10-9, in the first period and killed off two UConn power plays.
The second period played out much like the first as UConn potted the go-ahead goal and Boston College notched the equalizer. Britney Chandler struck at 12:40 with Michelle Binning and Kristen Russell earning the assists. Less than a minute later, Fardelmann stuffed in a goal on a feed from McDonald. Junior Erin Blood, who cleared the puck from the Boston College zone, was credited with the second assist. The Eagles again outshot the Huskies, 12-9.
Thibault registered her second point of the game when she converted a power play goal seven seconds after Fardelmann was sent to the penalty box for hitting from behind. The Eagles played catch up for the remainder of the period, but despite outshooting the Huskies once again, 12-5, Boston College could not put up the tying goal.
Schaus was pulled for an empty net with 1:09 remaining, and made 20 saves in 58:37. Wilson stopped 32 shots for the game to pick up her 17th goal of the season.
Boston College will next play in the Beanpot Championship Game Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. when they take on Boston University in Conte Forum. -BC-
