Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Eagles women's lacrosse team was one of three schools awarded the IWLCA's Team Community Awareness Award on Monday, according to the association.
BC, the Division I awardee, was recognized for its "outstanding contributions to community life". The team made many trips to Franciscan Children's Hospital, in Brighton, Mass., including special visits to decorate cookies at Christmas and Easter. The Eagles also worked for Food for Family, in which they collected canned foods from hundreds of locations and delivered them to local housing projects.
Members of the team also exchanged letters and visited with students from inner-city schools. They talked about what it means to be part of a team and the importance of staying in school.
The lacrosse team was also honored for its work in the community by the BC athletic department as the 2007 recipient of the Ignatian Cup.
Head Coach Bowen Holden was extremely pleased of her teams' accomplishments.
"I am extremely proud of the work our student-athletes do beyond the field and outside the classroom" Holden said. "Each of them embraces the Jesuit philosophy of service to others and does so simply because it is a part of who they are. They truly enjoy the experiences they have. These activities are invaluable in the development of caring, capable, and committed citizens - the type who are important to Boston College."
Indiana University of Pennsylvania earned the Team Community Awareness Award for a Division II school and Dickinson College for Division III.
