Women's Basketball Captures 66-60 Win in Comeback

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Boston College sophomore Mickel Picco hit five three-pointers, four in the second half to lead the Eagles past La Salle, 66-60, in a non-conference battle at Conte Forum Sunday afternoon. The Eagles are now 8-3, while La Salle dropped to 3-6.
Picco was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc in the game. Her five three's set a new career high as she hit four against Virginia last season. Picco finished with 17 points, 14 in the second half.
The Eagles were down until just under six minutes to play when Picco heated up. She would hit two three's in one minute to spark the comeback. At 5:27, Picco hit her fourth three of the game to cut the Explorers lead to three points, 53-50. She tied the game at 4:51 on another deep ball from behind the arc, 53-53. Sophomore Ayla Brown gave the Eagles their first lead of the day on a jumper from the baseline at 3:27.
The Explorers came back on a NBA three-pointer by Jamie Walsh (15 points) at the three minute mark. BC freshman Stefanie Murphy fouled Walsh and the Explorers went up 57-55 on her foul shot to compete the four-point play.
BC finally took the lead for good when Murphy grabbed the rebound on a missed jumper and calmly hit the lay-up and was fouled. Murphy's good free throw gave BC a 60-57 lead. Murphy, Picco and Brittanny Johnson then hit two free throws apiece down the stretch to seal the victory.
Murphy finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while freshman Jaclyn Thoman added eight points, six rebounds and a career-high 11 assists. Sophomore Ayla Brown added nine points, four rebounds and seven assists.
In the first half, BC went down 5-0 to start the game and was down until the sixth minute in the second half. The Explorers held a commanding 38-28 lead at the half as Carlene Hightower, who finished with 17 points, notched 12 of her points in the half. Walsh, who hit four three-pointers, also had 12 in the first half.
