Lake Buena Vista, FL -
The Boston College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to third seed Florida State in the quarterfinal round of the 2007 ACC Women's Soccer Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL on Wednesday. The Eagles, who were seeded sixth at the tournament, are now 11-5-3 on the season, while the Seminoles are now 12-4-3. Florida State will play No. 2 Wake Forest on Friday in the next round, while No. 1 seed North Carolina will battle Virginia.
"I think it was a great soccer game. We had some early chances that we didn't take advantage of,'' said Boston College head coach Alison Kulik. "Obviously, it's a game of inches.''
Florida State broke open a tight game in the 72nd minute when Katrin Schmidt ran on the end of a far post service from Mami Yamaguchi. Schmidt broke through the Eagles defense and slid to push the ball by the diving goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure as they had four corner kicks and five shots in the final 13 minutes of action. Freshman Chelsea Regan had a header wide of the goal off a corner kick. Sophomore Kelly Henderson's shot from just outside the box in the 79th minute was pushed wide of the far post.
In the first half the Eagles attacked early. In the ninth minute of play freshman Hannah Cerrone fired a shot from outside the box but the Florida State keeper Erin McNulty came up with the save. Cerrone's effort was followed seconds later by BC freshman Natalie Crutchfield's shot that hit the near post. The Eagles had five shots, three in the first 15 minutes of play.
BC goalkeeper Sarah Buonomo started after missing the last ACC match vs. Virginia Tech last week. The junior had two saves, including a huge save on Schmidt in the first half that kept the game knotted at 0-0. McNulty had three saves in the Seminoles win.
Offensively, BC had 11 shots, two apiece from Gina DiMartino and Brooke Knowlton. Florida State finished with 13 shots. The Eagles finished with five corner kicks to the Seminoles three.
