CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Kelsey Johnson surpassed Deanna Herman's Boston College volleyball career kills record Saturday evening in a 3-2 victory against the Virginia Cavaliers at Power Gymnasium.
The record-setting-kill occurred in game one on an assist from Brittany Pierpont that Johnson connected to the back middle row to help secure a 30-26 win. The kill was her eighth of 28 kills on the evening.
The Las Vegas, Nev. native, who has totaled 1,422 kills in her career, broke Herman's record of 1,402 career kills set in 1996. Herman, a 1996 BC graduate, held the record for 11 seasons.
Johnson has left her mark in the BC volleyball record book in a number of other statistical categories. Along with being first in career kills, she ranks first in career attack attempts (3,828), seventh in career service aces (98), tied for eighth in career attacking percentage (.201) and 11th in games played (409).
During the 2007 campaign, Johnson has also set single-season records for the Eagles. Johnson set the record for most kills in a season (482) and ranks eighth in service aces in a season (38).
Johnson ranks among the elite within the Atlantic Coast Conference as well. She ranks third in kills-per-game (4.43) and points-per-game (5.13) and sixth in aces-per-game (0.39) on the season.
The Eagles have two games remaining on the season. The first game is on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against Georgia Tech followed by a game Friday, Nov. 23 versus Clemson for Johnson to increase her career accomplishments in BC volleyball history.
