Newton, Mass. - No. 14 Boston College lost an overtime battle to No. 19 Virginia, 3-2, in the ACC Quarterfinals held at BC's Newton Campus Turf Field on Thursday. The Eagles dropped to 12-8, while the Cavaliers improved to 11-8. The two teams have battled 10 times, each team taking away five wins. Every game has been decided by one goal, dating back to 1984.
The Eagles scored their quickest goal of the season, notching a score 46 seconds into the game. Sophomore forward Chelsey Feole netted her 11th goal of the season on the first corner of the game. Senior midfield Tara Fernandes inserted to junior midfield Katie Qugalia for the stick stop. Junior forward Bob Dirks gave it up to Feole on the left side, who nailed the right corner of the net to give BC a 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers evened the score in the fourth minute of action. Katerine Bounds fired a pass to Traci Ragukas, who knocked the ball in midair past junior goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz to tie the game.
Neither team scored a second goal for the rest of the half and the teams went into the locker rooms tied. Virginia outshot BC, 11-2, and Berkowitz recorded five saves in the half. The Eagles converted their only corner opportunity into a goal, while the Cavs were unsuccessful in six attempts.
BC took the lead in the 43rd minute on another penalty corner. Senior back Brenna Leahy inserted to Quaglia for the stick stop and Dirks nailed the goal boards for her 13th goal of the season. Quaglia's two assists in the game brought her season total to four.
With a little more than three minutes left in the game, Virginia was awarded two corners in a row. Berkowitz made three key saves to keep the Eagles' lead. The Cavaliers did managed to tie the score at 68:01 when Ragukas slipped the ball past Berkowitz after collecting her own rebound.
With 15 seconds left in the game, BC netted the go-ahead goal off a free hit at the top of the circle. The goal was called back, however, because an Eagle did not touch the ball inside the circle.
Heading into overtime, the Cavaliers had a commanding lead of shots (19-5) and corners 10-2). Berkowitz recorded four more saves in the second half and UVA goalie Amy Desjadon saved one shot.
One minute into overtime, in seven-versus-seven play, Berkowitz saved Lauren Elstein's first shot, but on the ensuing scramble in front of the net, Elstein slipped the second shot by Berkowitz for a Virginia win.
Virginia will take on No. 1 North Carolina in the ACC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. at Newton Campus. No. 3 Wake Forest will play No. 2 Maryland in Friday's second matchup at 7 p.m. after defeating No. 12 Duke, 3-2.
