College Park, Md.--Five different Maryland players scored against the eighth-ranked Boston College field hockey team Saturday afternoon in College Park, Maryland in the opening ACC contest for both teams. The loss drops the Eagles to 5-2 overall while the No. 1 Terps remain undefeated at 8-0.
Maryland started the scoring 13:54 into the first half when Berber Rischen drove straight through the lane and tallied her second goal of the season. The Terps increased their lead to 2-0 before halftime on a pass by Emily Trycinski which Nicole Muracco buried past Boston College goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz.
Berkowitz made two saves in the first half while Maryland goalkeeper Kathryn Masson stopped one. Maryland outshot Boston College, 8-1, in the first thirty-five minutes of play.
In the second half, Maryland scored three times in just over three minutes to break open the game. At 51:23, last season's national player of the year Paula Infante broke away from Eagle defenders and knocked in the Terps' third goal of the game. Kristina Edmonds scored on a penalty stroke a minute and a half later, and 30 seconds after that, Jannek van Leeuwen deflected the ball from a corner into the net to finish off the game's scoring.
After a Boston College timeout at 58:28, the Eagles pushed into Maryland territory and got off four of their five shots on goal, each one saved by Masson. The final shot tally gave the Terps a 20-5 advantage, with junior Brenna Leahy leading Boston College with two shots. Maryland also finished with an overwhelming 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Boston College will stay in College Park for Sunday's match against Towson at 11:00 a.m.
