Chestnut Hill, Mass.--The women's ice hockey season gets an early start this year according to the 2006-07 schedule released today by Boston College. The Eagles' first game will be at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on September 29 at 7 p.m.
The women will play their home-opener at Kelley Rink against Quinnipiac on October 7, a week earlier than they did in 2005. The first Hockey East game on the schedule will be against the Maine Black Bears in Orono on September 15. Boston College will play Maine twice more during the season.
The Eagles will play three games against New Hampshire, who defeated Boston College 6-0 in last year's Hockey East title game. Boston College will meet with cross-town rival Boston University three times, including twice during a home-and-home series on January 19 and 20. The team will also face Hockey East opponents Northeastern, Connecticut, Providence and Vermont three times each this season.
For the first time since 2001, Boston College will host the women's Beanpot Tournament at Conte Forum and attempt to repeat as trophy-winner. The 28th annual tournament will take place February 6 and 13.
The Boston College women's ice hockey team finished 2005-06 with its best record, 20-11-4, in program history, finishing second in the Hockey East standings. The Eagles made their first-ever appearance in the Hockey East Tournament championship game last season. Deborah Spillane, then a sophomore, scored a team-high 35 points and tied then-freshman Becky Zavisza for goals, netting 17. Spillane and senior Michelle Lombardi will lead the 2006-07 team as co-captains.
