MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Goaltender Brian Elliott and forward Chris Collins did not walk away with the Hobey Baker Award on Friday. But one of them will win a national championship on Saturday.
Elliott and Wisconsin, the No. 1 overall seed, will face Collins and Boston College in the NCAA Hockey title game at the Bradley Center.
The Badgers (29-10-3) enjoy the home-state advantage in the Frozen Four and posted a 5-2 triumph over Maine on Thursday as Elliott made 26 saves.
Collins recorded his third hat trick of the season to lead the Eagles (26-12-3) to a 6-5 win over North Dakota on Thursday.
Elliott and Collins were finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey's version of the Heisman Trophy. But that honor went to Denver defenseman Matt Carle, who had won championships the previous two seasons with the Pioneers.
"I'm a team kind of guy, so I'd trade the Hobey Baker for a chance to be playing tonight (Saturday)," Collins said.
Collins scored his 32nd, 33rd and 34th goals of the season in Thursday's win.
The Eagles last captured the NCAA title in 2001. Coach Jerry York has won national championships at Boston College and Bowling Green (1984) and ranks second in career wins with 749.
Hoping to lead Wisconsin to its first hockey title in 16 years, Elliott leads the nation in goals-against average (1.57) and win percentage (.803) and was tied for first with eight shutouts.
